Midlothian Prebirth to Three Guidance

Pre-Birth to Three: Positive Outcomes for Scotland's Children and Families is a document introduced by the Scottish Office, in association with Learning and Teaching Scotland to provide guidance for all those whose work involves caring for babies and young children.  The four key features of Birth to Three are closely linked: 

  • Rights of the Child
  • Relationships
  • Responsive Care
  • Respect

Our nursery staff work very closely with the Pre-Birth to Three document to provide the quality experiences children under 3 years old need: from feeding, cuddles and nappy changing to sensory experiences, outdoor play and music.

Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence aims to achieve a transformation in education in Scotland by providing a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum from 3 to 18. The Curriculum includes the quality of experiences which are planned for children and young people through their education, wherever they are being educated.

The 3-18 curriculum aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the attributes, knowledge and skills they will need to flourish in life, learning and work. The knowledge, skills and attributes learners will develop will allow them to demonstrate four key capacities: to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

We employ a full time teacher, Jenni who supports all our nurseries with the curriculum. She worksacross the 5 nurseries supporting the Pre-school rooms. Jenni supports the staff with planning, to ensure that we provide breadth, depth and challenge to children's learning. She support the staff in providing opportunities which support the children's development. She works with new staff in the room to ensure they become familiar and confident in working with the curriculum for excellence. During her week at the nursery Jenni will work with all the children in Pre-school doing small group times, and providing opportunities which support the planning in the room. She also works closely with staff to develop new initiatives which have been brought forward and which they want to develop within the room.
